University of Miami Power Women Panel

University of Miami alumni, parents, students, and friends are cordially invited to a complimentary special panel discussion featuring prominent local UM alumnae. This complimentary event is hosted by the Greater Los Angeles Alumni Cub, in partnership with the Women Helping Women in Entertainment Organization, to meet and network with the following dynamic panelists as they share their successful career paths and answer your questions:
Rachel Brill, B.S.C. ’02
Director of Unscripted Development, TNT

Rachel Brill, Director of Unscripted Development, brings a wealth of reality expertise to the emerging TNT Unscripted Originals team. Working alongside Brett Weitz, TNT's vice president of series development, Brill is responsible for identifying unique pitches and fostering the creative development of all pilots and unscripted series, including this summer's reality competition, THE GREAT ESCAPE from the team of Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Bertram Van Munster and Elise Doganieri. Prior to joining TNT, Brill served as vice president of development and supervising producer at ZOO Productions. While at ZOO, Brill oversaw development and production of pitches, presentations and pilots, including the Emmy-nominated ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER?; GSN's LINGO, with Bill Engvall; HUB's FAMILY GAME NIGHT; truTV's SOUTHERN FRIED STINGS and OVER THE LIMIT; TV Land's HOW’D YOU GET SO RICH? with Joan Rivers; MTV's BUSTED; and CMT's REDNECK DREAMS. In addition to development, Brill supervised specials and premiere season launches for such shows as NBC's All-Star Celebrity Treasure Hunt; Disney's first unscripted series, PrankStars; WEtv's JOAN & MELISSA: JOAN KNOWS BEST?, starring Joan Rivers; Lifetime's BUNCO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; and truTV's SPEEDERS and spin-off series SPEEDERS FIGHT BACK. Earlier in her career, Brill was on the production team of Oxygen's GIRLS BEHAVING BADLY, with Chelsea Handler, and spin-off GUYS BEHAVING BADLY, with Ken Jeong. Brill graduated from University of Miami with a double major in broadcasting and political science and currently resides in Los Angeles.

Dawnn Lewis, B.M. ’82

Grammy Award Winning Singer, Songwriter, Film Actor, and Series TV Creator/Producer

Dawnn Lewis is a multitalented and multifaceted individual: a Grammy Award-winning singer, multiple ASCAP & BMI Award-winning songwriter, film actor I’M GONNA GIT U SUCKA, DREAMGIRLS and a Series TV creator/producer (BLACK JAQ) for ABC. She is presently co-starring with Courtney B. Vance & Tyler Williams in the Disney film “LET IT SHINE”, which got record breaking viewership of 5.7 million on it’s June ‘12 premiere, and gives voice to the title character in the soon to be released animated feature film DINO TIME!, as well as a supporting role in the award winning animated-futuristic-sci-fi film STRANGE FRAME. Oct. – Dec. ‘12, she will co-star with Vanessa Williams in the Lynn Nottage play INTIMATE APPARREL. While shooting her recurring role as Dr. Knapp on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Dawnn recently finished production on two films: TWO IN co-starring with “DAYS star” Allison Sweeney & Ed Asner and the groundbreaking John Avnet/Rodrigo Garcia short film series WIGS!, in the piece JENIFER written and directed by Mykelti Williamson, for which she also composed and performed the films underscore music. She’s on the National Advisory Board of the NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS which broke ground in Atlanta, Georgia June ‘12, and is in the midst of her third term on the SAG National Board of Directors, participating in it’s recent successful merger with sister union AFTRA, while continuing to serve as National & Los Angeles Co-Chair of the SAG now SAG-AFTRA Singers Committee. She recently guest starred on (CBS) CSI: MIAMI, (FOX) BREAKING IN & (BET) REED BETWEEN THE LINES. Perhaps best known for her roles on the hit TV shows A DIFFERENT WORLD (composer of shows theme song), HANGIN’ WITH MR. COOPER, ANY DAY NOW, she also continues her recurring role on the ABC Family’s THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER and until recently the CW Network series ONE TREE HILL. She was featured in the Warner Bros. feature film THE PREACHERS KID & the Fox animated film FUTURAMA: INTO THE WILD GREEN YONDER.. Dawnn also starred in the 2009 NYC City Center “Encore’s” presentation of THE WIZ as Addapearle. She was honored with the 2008 INTEGRITY AWARD from the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival. She is often called upon to create and establish leading characters in successful shows in a variety of genres such as: “The Voice Of God” in the World Premiere Musical NORMAN’S ARK at the Ford Theatre; starring in the World Premiere of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David musical LOVE SWEET LOVE & receiving rave reviews and the BEST ACTRESS: FRED AWARD (Los Angeles) and nominated for the 2007 BEST ACTRESS: SUZI AWARD (Atlanta, ALLIANCE THEATRE), for her “knock your socks off!!!” performance in the World Premiere of the Broadway hit “SISTER ACT: THE MUSICAL” as the “outrageous, Nun-On-The-Run”, Deloris Van Cartier. Last summer she re-created her spellbinding performance in Donald Welch’s star-studded cast of THE DIVORCE. Both THE DIVORCE & SISTER ACT were nominated for multiple NAACP Image Awards. In 2000 she won the Best Actress NAACP Image Award for her transforming performance in THE MARRIAGE. Dawnn’s record label, Morning Jewel Music, released her successful solo CD Worth Waiting For; the title song is featured in the Disney movie THE POOF POINT soundtrack, in which she starred. She gives voice to animated characters for various TV series including THE CLEVELAND SHOW, THE LIFE & TIMES OF TIM, FUTURAMA, KING OF THE HILL,THE BOONDOCKS, The X-MEN & SPIDERMAN (to name a few). Musically, she’s recorded with or composed for Everett Harp, Patrice Rushen, Vanessa Williams, Nancy Wilson, Take 6, Weyman Tisdale, Grover Washington Jr., Quincy Jones & Tom Scott to name a few. Dawnn also finds time to teach Master Classes, mentor youth across the country, give motivational lectures and lend her support to: The United Negro College Fund; American Cancer Society; The March of Dimes; Youth Entertainment Studios; the Hall of Fame Foundation; Habitat For Humanity; The United States Conference on AIDS; The K.I.S. Bonnie Reiss, B.B.A. '76

Global Director, USC Schwarzenegger Institute
Bonnie Reiss, a dynamic and accomplished attorney, advocate and strategist was named the Global Director of the USC Schwarzenegger Institute in 2012. She has a remarkable career having worked in the public sector for U.S. Senators and Presidents and founded and served as CEO for three national nonprofit organizations. She was a highly respected entertainment attorney and utilized her legal and accounting background to the benefit of many corporate boards she served on or advised. She served as Senior Advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger from 2003-2007, advising on all major policy initiatives, budget and political strategy and served on the California State Board of Education from 2003-2005. In 2009 she stepped in to serve as California Secretary of Education for the final year of Governor Schwarzenegger's term of office. She currently serves on the University of California Board of Regents, and the University of Miami President's Council.

Taryn Southern, B.S.C. '05
Actress, Writer, and Producer
Taryn is an actress, writer, producer, and host whose online work has more than 100,000,000 views across the web. Aside from guest star and recurring roles on shows such as New Girl, The League, Rules of Engagement, American Dad, and Guys With Kids, Taryn also maintains a YouTube channel with more than 100,000 subscribers and consults part-time for companies looking to improve their digital media strategy.
Her e-achievements include: selling, producing, and hosting the first social media-based TV series, Project MyWorld, for DirecTV, hosting the first-ever live digital broadcasts of The Grammy’s, The Golden Globes, The American Music Awards, The X-Factor, including Avatar, Sex and The City, Twilight, and being the first person to sell a scripted TV pilot based on a web series (2007 to MTV) and to sign a first look deal with a digital studio (2009 - Break Media). In addition, her videos have been featured in People, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Redbook, Maxim, USA Today, E! News, Hardball with Chris Matthews, FOX news, Geraldo at Large, CNN, and The Early Show, and she has a Spike TV Award for Viral Video of the Year.
